this edition of MIK involves a lot of names and styles of music that i've been really feeling for some time now. some names have been around, others are really starting to take off with some big original productions this past summer, while others still are just starting to make a name for themselves.

two of the eight artists in MIKv4's 30 minutes i'll mention in more detail. first off, Holy Ghost!, a duo outta Brooklyn, NYC. these guys really broke out 2 years ago with their release of 'Hold On' for DFA Records and have since mastered the neo-disco wave of the late 2000s. their newest production, 'I Will Come Back,' is truly a masterpiece, they've remixed Phoenix's big single 'Lisztomania' this year, and have upcoming remixes for Kings of Leon, Data Rock, and Van She. look out for an LP sometime in 2010. these guys are gonna be big.

next up is Classixx, another duo but coming from L.A. have been around for a minute themselves, remixing YACHT, Holy Ghost!, Phoenix, and Major Lazer this year, adding their airy-synthy spells and disco vibes making for some incredibly enjoyable listening. their latest single, 'I'll Get You,' is much of the same fun, more than danceable music, a great track to trick us into thinking the summer is still alive!

so go grab this mix, giver' a listen, and i'm sure you'll love these guys as much as i do. enjoy...

as we try to breathe life back into DIG , some help is going to be needed. the first comes in the form of rolling hills and traditional rooves viewed from the train a few weeks ago en route to Korea's third largest city, Daegu.

but let's get some real help now, to soothe those aching ears shall we? one of this years biggest new releases has got the indie scenesters by the threads of their handmade costumes. Veckatimest, from Brooklyn-bred Grizzly Bear, is really a fantastic album, giver a listen. but what's got me by the threads is this upside down remix of 'Two Weeks' by none other than the French genius, Fred Falke. he's taken a seemingly unremixable-indie rock song and turned it completely on its head. capturing some great aspects of the original and throwing in his signature spacie-good feeling synths and a mean bassline has made it a must listen!

let's bring this thing back now alright? a little hiatus has turned into 2 months with no word from your favorite korean bloggers and now we're sitting on lots of shit to COME AT YOU with. so no more foolin around cause as my man whiz pointed, we back for the very first time.

first thing's first and that's to let those of you who don't know that SEOUL IS THE SHIT and that Steve Aoki throws a mean party. this guy knows how to work a crowd and my god shit got crazy last friday night at the Gayagum Theatre in Seoul. Aoki was in good form, doin what he does best pourin vodka and champagne over the crowd then jumping on top of them, myself included in the tangled mess that was the dancefloor. the seoul hipsters bring it well too i gotta admit, full costumes and all, they seem to know their music and how to have a good time. gorgeous girls were everywhere and if the drinks hadn't been $10 i totally would've bought some lucky korean freshie a drink.

the DIG staff would like to apologize for neglecting this here blog and leaving our faithful readers to speculate as to what we've been up to. that being said, here's a short recap of the last month and a half:

- rocked a full house at club fabric

- taught children about transportation and multiculturalism

- watched the lotte giants get shitcanned by almost every team they played

- contemplated our worth at the suicide cliffs of taejongdae

- didn't get swine flu

and lastly....

- navigated the 9 floors of the massive - and beautiful - shinsegae department store/mall.

this place is fucking crazy. i would never have expected this level of quality in korea, but it's dope. this is what every department store is like in japan: high quality food markets, designer shops, huge ass movie theater, skating rink, driving range, spa... you could spend a weekend here easy.

in other news, the better magic dj's will be taking over zipcode yet again for a special party. this time its 1+1 which means 2 for 1 mixed drinks all night. don't sleep

this is haeundae beachee during peak beach-going season. despite the weather being suitable for beach going & drinking the last several weeks, the crowds don't actually come out until mid june-july.

there's really been no one there. supposed to be about 26 degrees celsius this weekend but you can expect only a fraction of this mess of people. it's not until the umbrellas go up and small 10 x 10 ft blocks of sand go up for rent with umbrellas do the people actually come out. but by the end of august, the people are gone. the weather's the same but there's nobody to be seen. so we'll continue to take in as much of the beach as possible until the millions flock to to this beautiful beach (accessible via subway PS).

if you don't already know, saturday went off at kino-eye in ksu, my first night takin the dj spot in busan's favie foreigner bar. nothin too crazy dancy bullshitty, just some good, fun tunes with a great crowd. i had a great time doin it too, besides being asked by some dumb girl to play YMCA. really, you want me to YMCA? i didn't know it was a wedding. fucking pissin me off...this weekend we got the gangster party at zip so get out your rags and move it back across the street. MIKv2 coming out sometime this week, been busy man!

just hit five months in the land of kimchi and pork, so i felt it might be a good idea to start taking some korean lessons (or hangeul, which is the written form). if you're not a complete idiot, it's easy to pick up random words and expressions. for example, '고 추 자 지' or 'gochu jaji' means 'pepper cunt.' hmmm.....what else? '바보' or 'babo' means 'fool' or 'silly.' '맥조' or 'mekjoo' means 'beer,' one of the first words learnt.

the actual hangeul alphabet is easy to pick up. king sejong the great was praised for its creation in the 15th century saying any educated person could learn the basic vowels and consonants in a morning's study. i was able to conquer the alphabet quite easily upon arrival back in november, being the scholar that i am, but never sat down to study some real grammar and vocab until a few weeks ago. since then, i'm now able to ask basic questions, answer some, and conjucate an ever growing list of verbs.

it's a challenge and there's no way i'll ever be 100% at it. even in 3 years time it would take hours and hours of practice everyday to really get the complex grammar down. the basic difference between english and hangeul is that our verb comes between the subject and the object (S-V-O) but their verb always comes at the end (S-O-V). WHOA! silly koreans.

god damn this teaching shit. new semester started in march so there's a lot of changes taking place and while i'm usually one to accept change with open arms, enough is enough already. longer days means less time for blogging, but really i've just lost some of my creative juices. anyway, i guess i'm just bitter right now. got some other things on my mind, i suppose.

it was a big weekend at zipcode. saturday night, grass was MIA so i held down the wheels of steel all by lonesome for a good 5 hours. shout out to all my waygook fam who came by... you guys make things easier for me. highlights include massive singalongs to the fresh prince theme song and journey - don't stop believing (i could never get away with either if there were koreans in the club). sick sunday afternoon at haeundae beach yesterday - drinking beer and playing football. i need more of that.

it's a black tie affair at zip this weekend.... booze cruise coming at the end of the month (break out the eyepatches and hoop earrings).

into the gu fridays (explained) will now be brought to you every other week. kinda forgot it entirely last week, fridays come a lot faster then you think. also looking to make this a running segment, but there's only really so much going on in the gu, that i'm bound to eventually run out. until that happens...

i've wanted to this post for awhile now but hadn't managed to snap the appropriate shot yet. this photo captured two daily sightings i encounter: the first being pickup trucks hauling around loads and loads of the daily catch, lots of smelly ass fish. i'm guessing this lady's debating on whether to purchase a few pounds of squid or octopus, favorites here. different trucks will offer a variety of vegetables most westerners wouldn't think you could actually eat.

the lady in the background is the second happening that i tend to come across daily. there's two recycling collecting stations within the neighborhood, bothy shoddy looking facilities, so i often see old lady's dragging these carts completely laden with paper and cardboard to the stations. my guess is they have an agreement with different shops and restaurants in the area to collect their recyclables, but they're all well spread out, thus the women all seem to develop terrible hunchbacks from carrying around these carts all day. you can't get a full grasp on these hunchbacks from this shot but it seems the older they get, the more their backs begin to turn 90 degrees from the waste.

above you see the regal silhouette of Mrs. Kim, the director/owner of my current place of employment. this lady sits in her office all fuckin day, doesn't speak a word to any of the foreign teachers, and every now and then manages to squint her face into one of the fakest smiles i have ever seen. she runs a tight-ass ship around here, but luckily her husband, Mr. Kim is like a korean version of cosmo kramer. my internet was down for the last couple of days, so he came over and attempted to fix it by unplugging my modem and then plugging it back in. hey doofus, you think i didn't already try that 50 times?

seomyeon is considered the middle of busan. the massive circular intersection is actually the second biggest in the city, but seomyeon has the most to offer then its rival yeonsan. 5 major streets converge into one confusing traffic circle, directed by a series of lights that only koreans dare to navigate. the surroundings offer a mess of shops and department stores, restaurants and food stalls, and thousands of blinding neon lights. the streets and alleys are packed with people, mostly the city's younger generation, and especially at night. it can be easy to get lost, especially when you don't know the area or are wasted, or both. the lotte hotel, department store, and casino (pictured top left) tower over the dong, becoming a good landmark for such drunkards. a favorite spot among foreigners is known simply as 'the german place,' a buffet styled restaurant with a microbrewery offering all you can eat & drink for a cool 18 000 won.

kimchi is a staple side dish here. you can eat at any time of the day and your meal will be served with kimchi. it's kinda like water. essentially, it's a fermented chinese lettuce (above), that is then spiced and seasoned accordingly. some kimchi is garbage but some is truly a nice complement to your meal. as with any dish, the best is always homemade, and in the case of this houeshold, amid the concrete playground, homegrown. i've seen even smaller patches of earth than this one with a few stalks vying for life between the cement cracks and the garbage. seems even the smallest pieces of soil are put to good use here, albeit for kimchi, but it's better than another apartment building.

we have jobs

well we don't seem to talk about it much here, but we do have jobs, the only difference is our paycheck is in won, not $$$$. we teach english to koreans. that's it. it's an easy, stress free job and can even be fun/rewarding on the good days. the kindy kids are adorable - pause - and can make you laugh no matter how bad they're behaving. it's always easy to make it fun for yourself and the kids. maybe start off a class by calling a student a 'babo' (ie. stupid/silly) or make a fake fart sound and then blame it on one of the students. clearly i've been trained to be a proper teacher.

the bad days of course are a different story. maybe you're sick, hungover or just really fucking tired, but those little devils can make you snap like you wouldn't believe. the '1 - 2 - 3' count is a classic, or threatening to take away stickers is always a quick way to shut them up. it may be hard to believe but it's quite possible to hate a 6 year old. any given class will have its bad apple. some don't listen, some talk back, and some are just fucking stupid. but you can never get legitimately upset at the kids, cause after all, they are just kids.

every school is different, and every waygook (aka foreigner) has something to say about their school, usually a lot, so i tend to stay away from any such conversations. some schools are kindy, some kindy/elementary, others only elementary, some people teach middle or high school, and others even teach university. which is best, i don't know. i know what i teach and that's it. some people really enjoy teaching, maybe they actually studied education or want to be a real teacher, but for most, it's just a job. and what else is a job for but to make MONEY MONEY MONEY. gotta get paid.

what a bang on week here in busan. a four day weekend where i got some solid skiing in, a three day work week, and already it's friday. so nice, right? and for a little boot, i received issue 59 of The Fader (if you don't know) in the mail yesterday, just 2 weeks after it came out, not bad.

well this truck is always parked under the train bridge next to my school. it's gotta be like 50+ years old but still runs like a charm, not that i actually know, just assuming. so if you think korea's all about brand new samsung cars (yes they make cars, and clothes, and virtually anything else you can think of), you're wrong! they like that vintage shit too.

the zipcode regulars. let's begin:

here we have (from left to right) katie, jessica and courtney. katie is a florist who once gave me a single rose as i finished my set. she is not the prettiest of the bunch but definitely the friendliest. jessica is a spunky little 20 year old with a beautiful smile and a penchant for korean dance routines. courtney is perhaps the most mysterious of the 3 - the darkhorse, if you will. opting for a bright blue jacket as opposed to the standard black woolen number, she stands out right away. couple that with a traditional korean face and you've got a real winner.

esther and julia are relatively new to zipcode. i have seen them there once before and i gave julia (right) a teddy bear which i won at the neighbouring batting cages. i don't know much about them, although julias boyfriend is currently serving in the army and esther studies ballet at university.

into the gu fridays

deepinthegu is maybe 3 months old now, so we thought it might be a good idea to explain where the name comes from. most cities in korea are divided into several 'gu's, similar to what we would refer to as a district or borough in western countries. (and within each gu, neighborhoods are divided into 'dong's, which if the word isn't already funny enough, also means pooh in korean, though with the slightest variation in pronunciation that it's nearly impossible to make that distinction unless you know your korean).

when referring to where it is you live within the city of busan, most people say 'so and so - DONG,' and then the obvious jokes being, 'ya my dong is pretty big,' or 'i gotta pretty nice dong,' or maybe even 'my dong really fucking stinks.'

so we are technically within a dong that's within a gu, and thus we're deep in the gu. which is also a clever little play on words (you're a thinker ziplock), that i hope doesn't need any explaining.

to better your understanding of what it might feel like to actually be deep in the gu, every friday deepinthegu.blogspot.com is proud to bring you 'into the gu fridays.' everyday, i take an enjoyable stroll through the neighborhood directly behind my apartment building, zigzagging this way and that through the small streets and alleys, never really taking the same route twice, and eventually arriving at my school. this friendly little neighborhood is filled with character and i'm always exposed to its different daily activities.

to start off the column, the shot above attempts to capture something that can't actually be captured via photography, that being smell, which is really unfortunate as the smells i am so lucky to take in are usually quite horrendous. whether it's a fish or shit smell, i'm yet to fully adjust to them and am not sure if i ever will overcome it, but i've started to remember where some of the bad sewers are and this is most definitely one of them. man, my dong stinks yo!

how amazing does this burger look? really fucking amazing. we discovered dave's diner last night after a few hours of frigid basketball. no better way to warm yourself up then eating one of the English expat's deluxe burgers. we're talking your standard lettuce-tomato-onions-pickles, grade A korean beef, and a hash brown to top it all off, with two layers of cheese! above and below the hash brown. genius. get it with a moosehead and you've got yourself one badass, post-Bball dinner.

in other unrelated news, i've managed to organize a little saturday getaway to busan's closest ski hill, Eden Valley. with 9 runs and an estimated 1.3 million people sliding their way down, it's sure to be a blast. i'm stoked yall.

so in kyoto - aside from filming short comedies in mcdonalds - we went to a lounge bar called pronto where a pretty young bartender named yukiko humored us all night as we got drunk as fuck. she told us she was studying drawing at a local college, so i asked her to draw pictures of us. she took a 20 minute break and came back with the drawing you see above. we were supposed to meet her the next night in osaka for a takoyaki party but it never materialized. in the words of namba: "fucking girls... blah blah blah"

a few points of interest:

- i'm finding out that staying out until 1 or 2 am every night is not conducive to waking up at 8:30 the next day to teach kindergarten.

- steak in korea is so-so and overpriced

TLJ. on a countless number of vending machines across japan, you'll find tommy's sorry looking mug, grouchily convincing you to purchase a refreshing beverage. chilled coffee seems to be a big thing in both korea and japan, coming in a variety of flavors and sizes, from water bottles to tinfoil sealed plastic cups to cans smaller then a red bull. but anyway you take your chilled coffee is guaranteed to be a nice, quick fix.

well our 6 day vacation to japan is finished and can only truly be described in two words: so nice. the japanese without a doubt have things dialed. every preconceived idea i had of the place came true. the country runs almost too perfectly and it's the little things that really set them apart from everyone else.

trains arrive and depart exactly at the specified time. heated toilet seats are actually turned on (in korea, never). you enter from the back door on buses and pay your fare at the front door when you've reached your stop, so as to not slow everyone else down. the cleanest streets i've ever seen. more than just flamboyantly dressed people, with the men probably taking longer on their hair then the women. the women are gorgeous. and the sushi, obviously. but the cake. my god. you'd never think of the japanese being known for their cake but people line up for that shit, and there's cake restaurants everywhere. strange yet somewhat understandable after having tried it. damn good cake.

now in warning, osaka might be the most expensive place i've ever been to, more so than both london and new york city, though it's quite comparable to nyc. midosuji street looks nearly identical to 5th avenue at some points. so if you're planning a trip, don't expect to even try to do it on a budget, cause what fun is that anyways.

but you can expect a lot more from us here at deepinthegu over the next few months. so keep reading. a big okini goes out to osaka for all your hospitality and an even bigger happy new years to all of you.

'tis the season

we've been a little dormant over here at deepinthegu. things were damn slow last week. ziplock was virtually on his deathbed and I was being incredibly lazy with nothing of interest to report. another typical weekend here with a bonus Sunday drunk for me. alas a shitty monday has come and gone, but now we're gearing up for a nice two weeks: christmas parties, an easy work schedule, Jin Young Park this saturday(!), and the new year's holidays. we'll be off to osaka on the 30th until the 4th, with a few days in kyoto, for a much needed vacation from the busanity. lucky for us, one of the only japanese DJs I know, Shinichi Osawa, will be doing a show the day we arrive. besides the obvious partying, we will be hitting any and every store that might have some clothing that will fit our large Caucasian asses. BAPE please!

there are always sights to see in the subways & stations here. this guy felt he would be more comfortable to take off his shoes before taking a nap in one of the busiest subway stations, seomyeon.

first off, everyone needs to listen to this: d'banj - why me. been dropping this in my set and this shit is a dealbreaker. WHY MIEU? anyway, last night jorge's estranged long-lost cousin nigel made an appearance (what up adscoco, goop) and while it was a welcome novelty, i can't endorse dropping $20 on that shit anymore. it was decent, but not mad decent, ya dig?

as far as that picture up there is concerned, i have re-discovered my love for Bacchus. these are mini-energy drinks that cost about 40 cents. the taste is similar to redbull but without the carbonation. so basically just a sugary syrup that makes you less of a zombie for like half an hour. whatever man. when i first got here and was jetlagged as fuck for like a week and a half, i was downing these cocksuckers at an alarming rate. but once i got into the swing of things, i kinda cooled off on the bacchus and just overindulged in the free coffee at work. but man, i'm back on the bacchus hard! haven't tried mixing it with soju yet but there's lots of time for that.

in other, more hilarious news, i found this on Era's blog. and while you can definitely buy that "chrome" garbage can at winners, someone needs to give this guy his own show...

yes the night was a big success, thanks for asking. many shout outs to all those that made it for the opening night. our takeover of the busan dj scene (and korea) has officially begun. i see a bright future ahead: after establishing ourselves as busan's premiere djs, it shouldn't be hard to use the fame to exploit it for all we can. after all, it is korea. on the horizon i can see lead rolls in the sequel to Old Boy; a tour with The Wonder Girls; custom shoe designs with Addidas (thanks Adam); and our faces surely will be on every billboard across the country. perhaps they'll even name a sidedish after us. see, how easy was that? thanks zipcode.

opening night at zipcode on saturday was a success. save for a few modest kinks that need to be ironed out, everything was kosher. maybe had one or ten too many tequila and soju shots but it's all good, right? things got a bit crazy and i didn't get home till 7:00 am. i wish i could remember what songs i played, but the first track was A Milli. two foreigners requested "any kanye" and MIA - paper planes, respectively. as if i wasn't gonna drop either.

things are good on this end. we're going to osaka, japan for new years eve so if anyone has like 2 grand to drop on a flight and wants to come have the new years party of their lives (sorry The Social, we got you beat this year), hit me up. we'll be spinning at zipcode in busan every weekend (probably thursdays too... why not?) so if you're in the kyungsung area, thats where we'll be.

well hello everyone. lucky me: after 5 or so weeks in busan, i am finally blessed with internet in my apartment. this means lucky you: more more and more busanity. however i am also cursed with a nasty korean cold that has begun to creep up on me and will be attempting to get a nice 10+ hour sleep shortly.

but i had to get something up. first off, as you may have noticed, i've decided to forgo my use of the uppercase letters in hopes to bring some consistency to d.i.g., you win ziplock. second, we've got some big things going on here and to give you the jist of it, busan's newest bar zipcode 11377 will be opening saturday night with music provided by myself and ziplock. ya, big things.

what up world

it's 11 am and i feel like i've just been chewed up and spit out by godzilla - currently i am drinking the biggest gatorade in korea. anyway, i got some pretty terrible news yesterday morning (those close to me know what this is about) and it made me feel very strange all day long. once the sun went down i made a conscious decision that i was gonna get fucked up no matter how weird/bad i felt.

met up with d'grass here in kyungsung for a sushi dinner which we both agreed was the best we've had so far

jin rolled up after dinner and met us at a bar called Thursday Party which is decent. cold beer and fooseball (and wet ashtrays, obv) but not much else. from there we went to Wa bar, which is a chain of "western ice bars". they serve you a bowl of snacks at these bars - at thursday party it was popcorn, at wa bar it was like coloured corn pops. really sugary and airy... jin ate like 4 bowls.

alas, we ended up at the infamous hip hop club known as Ghetto. walked in, went straight to the bar and ordered 4 vodka shots which cost 4,000 won (just under $4) for all of em. not bad right? a couple beers in and we were quickly approached by a couple korean cusos in deep v-neck t-shirts who introduced themselves as Hero and Louie. they're

opening a club called Zipcode next month.

anyway, a couple shots later we exchanged info and we're gonna promote some shit for them and spin at their club. feeling energized by this budding business relationship, d'grass and i began to do the rounds. we found a group of fun-loving youngsters dancing to kardinal and The Game. i got their attention by rapping along (works every time) and we began to talk. i noticed that none of them were drinking and d.g. quickly informed me that they were some kind of christian group. oh well.

they seemed pretty young so i asked one of the girls how old she was. her cuso buddy stopped me almost immediately and said "too young for you". i said "who the fuck are you?"

"go back to your fucking country". i wanted to lay him out, but hes probably a black belt in tae kwon-do or some shit so whatever. we later became friends anyway (grass will post some of his pictures at a later date).

so beyond the obvious "korea is not toronto, so its fucked"... let's examine some of the finer nuances of busanian life:

1. every restaurant gives you a chilled little water bottle as soon as you sit down so you never look like the cheap motherfucker at the table who only orders a glass of water. unfortunately this place didn't hook it up, but normally they give you these little metal cups (also chilled).

2. most bars and restaurants allow smoking which is very much appreciated by yours truly. not only do smokes cost roughly $2.30/pack but most dining/drinking establishments set you up with a wet ashtray. this means the bottom of the ashtray is covered by some kind of wet nap - or otherwise damp cloth - which immediately extinguishes your butt upon contact. it's a very subtle touch, but believe me korea, such nuances do not go unnoticed or unappreciated.

3. people stand on both fuckin sides of the escalators! what happened to standing on the right and walking on the left?! most times i'll let the escalator do the walking for me, but what happened to choice? c'mon now, i need options when i'm in a hurry

4. napkins are not commonplace. instead, restaurants set up each table with a mini kleenex thing. pretty weak

5. batting cages are just sick

Don't fuck with the Korean police

So. I got into a little bit of trouble this past weekend and if any of you know my parents, please try to spare them on the following because they're already old enough and don't need any more grey hair.

I wish I could remember everything but that seems to be an issue when you blackout. Hmmm. Started off Saturday night drinking some nice liquor recently purchased by friends Tom and Erin who live in my building. We're talkin JD, Jose, Absolut and Kahlua and we managed to get into each of them while finishing the vodka.

We went up to the PNU (Pusan National University) area where our plan had been to chill out and drink some dongdong-ju. Keep things quasi low key.

Dongdong-ju

The drink is kinda like a rice wine, traditional Korean drink, and you chill in this little heated hut in a nice courtyard and eat fried vegetable pancake goodness.

I've been told we went to a bar where eventually I had to be sent home via taxi. Upon arriving near my apartment, I got into an argument with the driver over the fare which escalated into a shoving match. The police were seemingly right around the corner and when I tried to flee the scene, my drunken stupor brought me only to the cold pavement.

Most of what happens next I was told by the police Sunday morning. The whole problem really comes down to the language barrier and those of us who dealt have with the police in Quebec knows that it is insanely frustrating not being able to communicate. I lost my temper and did something stupid. One of the cops handed me a phone to speak to an interpreter and I threw it on the ground in anger after which I was tackled, cuffed and thrown into the police car.

They brought me to a small police station where they emptied my pockets. I have this small notepad with a bunch of numbers from all the people I've been meeting so far. They called this one Korean guy Sean who actually came to try and get me out of there at 3 am. When they told him they weren't letting me go, I got even more angry and spat in one of the police officer's face. Again, pretty stupid move.

Now they moved me to another police station and brought me into a holding cell. Based on what I had just done, they felt it necessary to hog-tie me. One of them had their foot on my face and neck while the other two were tying my hands behind my back and to my feet. Then they put a helmet on me. I was told in the morning this was all done for MY protection, so that I wouldn't hurt myself. But this ended up hurting me more than anything I could ever have done in an empty cell. The rope was on so tight that I think I have permanent nerve damage in my right hand, still can't feel my thumb.

Somewhere along the way, my leather jacket got ripped up by the police. Beyond repair. So if anyone has a Danier Leather connection, tell them my story. Help me out on this one.

So yes I did something really stupid and being drunk, even blackout drunk, is no excuse. Maybe I'm even lucky that they didn't do anything worse to me. If I was in another Asian country, say Vietnam, Thailand, China even, I doubt I would be able to write this right now. But come on. I thought South Korea was past their turbulent political history, where police-protestor clashes were a relatively common thing. Civil rights have come along way here I suppose, but nothing compared to North America. Being hog-tied is no way for police to treat a human being.

These last shots were taken when I woke up. They actually never took my camera. But the shots speak little of how sore I felt at the time and now even. Bruises everywhere, my head had been cut open, hands and knuckles cut, and my wrists are swollen as fuck.

There's a small chance I'll be deported but I'll find out after the Canadian embassy receives the report. The director from my school eventually came Sunday morning to pick me up. Don't think I've ever been so embarrassed. He was really cool about the whole thing though, felt bad for me and bought me some McDonald's to cheer me up. But I now know to never again fuck with the Korean police.

Welcome and Last Weekend

Alright. So whats up. Welcome to deepinthegu.blogspot.com. We're far away from our home city of Toronto but have set up shop in a new home: Busan, South Korea. We'll be bringing you all the dirt from our travels with lots of pictures and videos to come. Definitely gonna be a slow start on my part, with no internet in the apartment for a few more weeks. But I'll do my best.

Me and ziplock were all over Kyungsung University area last Friday night. We must have gone to like 8 different bars, met tons of good people, both foreigners and Korean, and eventually got home round 4ish, not too bad. But I was woken up round noon Saturday with a bang on the door from my colleague Tom. After a lot of water, one subway ride and a taxi, we were hiking through Beomeosa Temple and the mountains in northern Busan.

The hike takes you up to the top of a range of mountains with beautiful views all around. Got some good perspective on my new city. Cable car down after a three hour hike and we're back in the concrete jungle.

Met up with a bunch of foreigners at 'The German Place' that night where you pay $16 for all an you can eat/drink your faces off. Good warm up for DJ Shadow. As if he came to Busan. The entire fucking city was at the venue, Club Maktum, where the entrance down was shaped like a giant whale's penis lit up with shimmering neon lights. He did his thing, we did ours. I felt shitty on Sunday.

Sunday though I made it down to the 'Seaman's Club,' aka the United Seamans Service, which has establishments in eight cities around Asia-Pacific where US Navy and merchants alike can get some home cooked, American styled food. But you gotta know someone with membership. Luckily enough I do. The place looks and smells like an American diner. The menu was nearly 15 pages and had everything I've been missing. Settled for a nice big burger with real bacon, french fries, salad, a coke and a Heineken. Loved every bite.

in november, 2008, as a cold chill began to cast a long and dark shadow over southern ontario, two men embarked on an excursion of asianic magnitude. they quickly found themselves deep in the gu.... this is their story
